Dr Wience Lai was conferred the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Education (Speech and Hearing Sciences) by The University of Hong Kong. Before that, she obtained a Master of Philosophy in Linguistics, and a Postgraduate Diploma in Education with concentration in English (with distinction) from The Chinese University of Hong Kong to further her interests in linguistics and language education, subsequent to her graduation from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University where she was awarded a Bachelor of Arts in Contemporary English Language with first class honours.

Prior to joining this institution, Dr Lai taught Linguistics and English in The Chinese University of Hong Kong, The Open University of Hong Kong and The Community College at Lingnan University.

Since joining this institution, Dr Lai has been teaching and serving as the Subject Leader of Academic English, Business English, Phonetics and Grammar subjects. She has also served as the Programme Leader of Associate in English for Business Communication, and has been engaged in programme validation exercises. Currently, she is the Discipline Team Leader of Bilingual Studies and Communication, Assistant Scheme Leader of BA (Hons) Scheme in Language and Communication and Deputy Director of the CPCE Centre for Pedagogic Research (CPCECPR).

Because of her passion in teaching and cherishment of relationship with students, Dr Lai was bestowed the HKCC Caring Teacher Award in 2013/14.

Besides teaching and academic administration, she has been the chief editor of college publications, and has organised study tours to UK and Germany.

Dr Lai is also active in scholarly activities. Her research interests lie mainly in phonetics and phonology, second language teaching, and the relationship between speech production and perception, on which she has presented in international conferences and produced research publications.

In her spare time, Dr Lai loves travelling with others and even solo. She enjoys planning her own tour and has travelled to more than 30 countries.
